Bio
Joicy is the founding psychotherapist at Salgado Psychotherapy. She has a Masters in Mental Health Counseling and is licensed to practice in New York. She has 9 years of experience working in the mental health field with children, adolescents, adults and the elderly. She has aided individuals with an array of mental health conditions from mild adjustment disorders to personality disorders.
Her philosophy is that through conversation and exploration we are all able to become aware of patterns created through our life experiences, develop healthy ways to navigate interactions, and have the opportunity to live a stable and healthy life. There is no “one size fits all” approach to therapy. Joicy utilizes a combination of practices with a focus on psychodynamic, humanistic, and decolonized approaches to healing. She believes that exploring current situations paired with reflecting on past experiences can be a recipe to develop awareness which can drive the process of change in people; if they so desire.
As a first-generation Queer Quechua-Peruvian immigrant, Joicy can relate to the unique experiences individuals have and what this can bring on top of life’s challenges as well as mental health conditions. Her therapeutic training has been key in aiding various communities. In turn, her personal experiences have served as one source from where she draws empathy.
This includes and is not limited to immigrants, children of immigrants, BIPOC, racialized folk and communities. She helps clients by aiding their process in developing skills to navigate life and she has a holistic focus on their mental health.
Allyship, privilege, racism, homophobia, colorism, history of colonization on mental health, and intersectionality are some topics that will be brought up and discussed within the therapeutic process.
